scary squirrel world SHAKE YOUR BUSHY TAIL

Patriots, the trauma inflicted on the innocent by the bushytail horde is immeasurable. It's all the worse, when the trauma occurs in childhood. Consider the following correspondence from a concerned reader:

I was looking at all the information on your website and was surprised that you have missed one of the biggest squirrel conspiracies of all time. Its called the Bushy Tail squirrel song and young campers have been forced to sing this for generations. The song has the power to turn a young brain to mush and the child into a hopeless squirrel lover.

I know this for a fact because I was went to a Christian summer camp as a child growing up in Michigan.

Every year I went from about age 8 to age 12 and everytime it was the same thing... first we'd have our campfire and hear about Jesus and such. Then the good night prayers. And then at the end we'd all stand and sing the Bushy Tail Squirrel Song.

Isn't it clear that this was brainwashing!!? Why else would we be sent to bed with that song still buzzing in our ears??? I even wonder if the people who ran the camp were really Christian. I mean, shouldn't we end the night with a prayer or a hymn and not a song about squirrels??? Maybe they weren't even people if you know what I mean!

So for two weeks out of the year for four years I sang that song. It did its damage and I really liked squirrels until I grew up and got my own house and the little b_____s ate up everything I planted and chewed up everthing else. That's when I snapped out of it and I guess you would definitely call me a Patriot now! So please warn everyone about the song and sign me...

DEATH TO SQUIRREL!!! DEATH TO THE BUSHY TAIL SQUIRREL SONG!!!!!!!!
~Patriot JL

Patriot JL refers to a well known children's song more commonly known as the "Gray Squirrel Song". There are a number of different versions with slightly differnet lyrics and/or lengths. We've mentioned the Gray Squirrel Song here and there, but we've never investigated its use (or abuse as the case may be). The reason for that will be clear later.

But in response to Patriot JL's request, we did a little research. Within a few minutes we discovered a plethora of pages that recite the lyrics, and with a little more effort we found four videos in which the participants sing and/or dance to the song. Consider the following; our editorial comment follows...

Gray Squirrel Song

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
shake your bushy tail.
Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
shake your bushy tail.
Wrinkle up your little nose;
hold the acorn in your toes.
Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
shake your bushy tail!

As you read, heard, and or saw, the Gray Squirrel Song is a simplistic ode to the might of the bushytail horde. Meant to influence and turn young minds to the skwerlside, it obviously carries its message over to adulthood just as Patriot JL discovered.

Take the first three video examples above. The first shows some sort of graduation ceremony in which the song is a salient feature. It may be a kindergarten graduation ceremony, but what sort of legitimate educational facility forces children to sing about skwerls (let alone make it part of commencement exercise)?

CLICK FOR HIDEOUS CHITTER In the second video, the young woman looks to be a captive of some clandestine organization. Her body language shows her to be suffering from high anxiety, she is surrounded by potted shrubbery, and she's obviously forced to wear a hideous green outfit to match. Can there be any doubt who or, rather, what captured her? (Click skwerl for comment)

The third video is harder to figure. Our photo editor, LOvey Squirrel, surmises that it was shot in a mental institution, perhaps at a sanity hearing, or maybe the performers are agents of skwerlhuggery working undercover as clinicians in order to spread the false promises of squirrel world domination to the patients. Ed. note: LOvey Squirrel was paroled from an institution for the criminally insane in 1997; so he should know.

The fourth video demonstrates the reason we do not consider the Gray Squirrel Song to be a major threat to civilization. In it, two women, clearly Patriots, tell the skwerl to "Take a peanut in your hand and shove it up your nose!" Need we say more...?

This Patriot version of the Gray Squirrel Song seems to spring up almost everywhere it's sung. The variations are endless, although where the skwerl can shove it is limited. However, substituting different objects for the word peanut, acorn, etc. sends a defiant message to the slavering chiiterboxes and those who would pervert music and song to spread the false promises of squirrel world domination.

READER COMMENTS

If he's not a left-wing liberal "progressive" just showing off his self-perceived fashionable intellect, Patriot JL just might be one of those taciturn man-boys who brought a squirrel rifle to his trade school class to show off to his Vocational Agricultural class across the hall. His is a paradox of some kind of insensitive stupidity and anti-sentimentalism I just can't put my finger on.

I love the Gry Squirrel song. At the Special Love camp I go to they sing it and do the actions that go along with it. It is a fun & funny song.
My sister, herself a patriot, once told me that one way to fight back against the devious squirrel plots is to rub two nickels together. It drives them crazy. We have to fight back.
"Take a peanut in your hand and shove it up your nose!"? Squirrels don't have hands and peanuts are much to small to fit in a squirrel's nose unless the nut was exeptionally small or the squirrel was exceptionally big nosed (or both)
I really like the song about the gray squirrel shaking his bushy tail. I would like a song about a red squirrel. I think it would be cute!
Yet another link between the religious right and world domination...
My daughter is learning this song at preschool, what can I do to save her!?!?
