ODE TO A SQUIRREL
by A. Silva

I saw a squirrel today,
Furry, cute and sweet,
I saw him hurry, scurry,
As he tried to cross the street.
He seemed almost fearless,
Unmindful of the cars,
I really wish he'd paid attention,
For he didn't make it far.
He froze right on the road,
In the middle of the street,
Then the squirrel snapped to attention
On his hind, squirrel, furry feet.
He seemed to change his mind,
And turned complete around,
The next poor squirrely knew,
He was flat upon the ground.
He never knew what hit him,
Never saw the car a'comin.
Across he would have made it,
If he'd just akept on runnin'.
