SQUIRRELS IN THE PANTRY
by Patriot Judith A. Jones

There are squirrels in my pantry
cause there are shells on the floor.

Did they come down the chimney
or in by the door?

I thought I heard some noises
of a small and stealthy kind
and so I went to look at just what I could find.

The pantry door was open the peanuts were a mess
there were muddy little footprints
that left nothing much to guess,

as to who were the culprits
who had done this crime
the damage was accomplished in very little time.

I heard a little chuckle,
I heard a little scratch,
I spun around and saw them
come back to see what they could snatch.

They've stared in the window
when the feeders have been bare
and squiggled up their noses
and given nasty glares.
They think I m a nut provider
with nothing else to do
but come at once to fill things
at their beck and hue.

But things are getting serious
when they come in on their own
did they come by twos and threes
or just one all alone?

There are squirrels in my pantry
cause there are shells on the floor.

Did they come down the chimney
or in by the door?
Their little minds are thinking and plotting day and night
on how to get more peanuts while I am out of sight.

Tonight I will wait patiently and watch for creeping feet
and catch them if I can as they steal a peanut treat.

There are squirrels in my pantry
cause there are shells on the floor.

Did they come down the chimney
or in by the door?
